IPL 2017: The most endearing moments off the field this season

In its ten years of existence, the Indian Premier League has not only entertained the cricket lovers around the country but has also touched the lives of the non-followers of the game in a great way by dishing out the entertainment factor.

The Indian Premier League is lot more than just a cricketing event. Over the years it has become synonymous with money, fame, glamour and entertainment. It is the amalgamation of all these factors which has been a major reason behind the success of the multi-billion brand.

The IPL, which was based on the idea to milk the country’s enormous cricketing talent and to take the game to the nooks and corners of India, became a successful money-spewing dragon which has grown many folds since its inception in 2008. Be it the glamour attached to it or the various national and international stars plying their trade together, the IPL soon took over the imagination of the people and became a household name in India.

In its ten years of existence, the league has not only entertained the cricket lovers around the country but has also touched the lives of the non-followers of the game in a great way by dishing out the entertainment factor.

Just like the previous years, the Indian Premier League season 10 was a spectacle. Right from the high-flying sixes, glorious boundaries and the star-studded stands, it lived up to the expectations of its huge fan base.

OPENING CEREMONIES

The organisers of the IPL introduced a unique trend to mark the tenth year of the league. Unlike the usual opening ceremony before the first match of every edition, this time there were eight different ceremonies held at all the eight venues. The ceremonies witnessed special performances from Bollywood stars, highlighting the culture of different host cities. The first opening ceremony saw Amy Jackson performing at Hyderabad, while Riteish Deshmukh and Tiger Shroff graced the ceremonies in Pune and Rajkot, respectively. Shraddha Kapoor and Monali Thakur performed in Kolkata’s first match at the Eden Gardens, Yami Gautam and Raftaar lit up grand opening ceremony in Delhi. It was Kriti Sanon who performed in Bangalore, while Disha Patani rocked Indore. Meanwhile, Malaika Arora Khan and Sushant Singh Rajput stole the show at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadum.

THE WAGs BRIGADE

The IPL is a heady cocktail of cricket and glamour and while the players showcase their expertise on the field, their wives and girlfriends (WAGs) too can be seen cheering for their loved ones from the stands, adding to the glamour quotient. This year we saw Mumbai Indians spinner Harbhajan Singh’s wife Geeta Basra and their daughter making their presence felt in most part of the tournament. Basra was a constant companion as Harbhajan travelled with the team to different cities. She cheered for every move that her husband made on the field and was also there when Harbhajan reached the milestone of 100 IPL wickets. Besides Basra, another Bollywood actor Hazel Keech, who got married to star all-rounder Yuvraj Singh last year, was present in most of the Sunrisers Hyderabad’s fixtures, supporting Yuvi from the sidelines.

Another star family which made its presence felt was Sunrisers Hyderabad’s captain David Warner’s wife and daughter. Warner, who is Australia’s vice-captain, shared pictures of his wife, Candice and elder daughter Ivy Mae throughout the tournament. Warner also stated that he loved his family to be around when was on the field.

Former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s wife Sakshi too was in attendance in most of the Rising Supergiant matches, cheering for her husband. Meanwhile, Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli, who missed the initial three matches in the IPL due to a shoulder injury, was seen spending some quality time with his girlfriend and Bollywood actor Anushka Sharma during the non-match days.

SACHIN TENDULKAR’S BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS

Even four years after his retirement, batting icon Sachin Tendulkar is continued to be worshiped in India. His mammoth fan-following was evident when an entire stadium stood up on its feet and sang "Happy Birthday" to wish the Master Blaster on his 44th birthday. Tendulkar turned a year older on April 24 and coincidentally Mumbai Indians were playing on the same day at the Wankhede Stadium, the home ground of Tendulkar. The Mumbai franchise celebrated their icon’s birthday at the Wankhede stadium during their match against Rising Pune Supergiant. Tendulkar, who was present at the dugout, told commentator Matthew Hayden: "This is really special. I thought we will cut the cake quietly. Never thought the whole stadium would be singing while I cut the cake."

PREITY ZINTA – THE CONSTANT FOR KINGS XI PUNJAB

Bollywood actor Preity Zinta has, over the years, been a constant supporter and a source of motivation for her team, the Kings XI Punjab. She has always been with the team through thick and thin and it would not be wrong to call her the 12th man of KXIP. This year too, Preity was at the stands rooting out for KXIP in every game, be it home or away. She is always among the players and her facial expressions during a match change with the fortunes of her team. Preity also never misses a chance to get the crowd behind her team. All these make Preity Zinta stand out among the owners of the IPL teams.

SHAH RUKH KHAN SENDS EDEN CROWD INTO FRENZY

The Badshah of Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan waved and showered flying kisses to fans from the stands during his team Kolkata Knight Riders’ last home game at the Eden Gardens. Nearly halfway through the game, Shah Rukh – clad in a white kurta -made an appearance on the giant screen with actors Sonu Sood, Sanjay Kapoor and son AbRam.
